The fabric is made to block light, and the two panels are designed to overlap in the centre, which helps reduce the bright line that often shows between curtains.
For the darkest result, use a rod that extends a little beyond the window frame on each side.

Measure from where the curtains will hang down to the floor and pick the length closest to that height. 84 in is the most common choice.
64 in and 84 in work well for windows above furniture or radiators. 96 in and 108 in suit tall windows and high ceilings, and a rod hung high can make a room feel taller.
One set of two panels suits most single windows. For windows wider than about 75 in, plan for an extra set.
